I once read that to try writing a novel without first creating a short story of the same is like asking a girl to marry you without first going on a date. You have to see how something works in the short term before you can express it in the long.
I’m not sure how true that is; personally, I think some stories just work better as novels. Crammed into short story form, they become bulky and lopsided. However, published writers also indicate that short stories are a much easier market to break into than getting your first novel on the shelf, and credentials in the one arena can fuel the other.
